Online Resources

Online Resources from the Lamont Public Library

Hello Students,

By now I am sure you have found time to read all the books in your house, so if you are looking for more books and online activities you can go via your computer to the Northern Lights Library System. The Lamont Public Library is part of the Northern Lights Library System.

First, you will need a library card to access their online resources, if you do not have a library card you can sign up for a temporary card, do not be confused if you are brought to the Northern Lights Library System web page. The temporary card is free!

Next, you need to go to the Northern Lights eResources page.  As you scroll down you will see lots and lots of eResources.  I will summarize some of the best ones for you.

Cloud Library - browse through digital shelves for great books to download.  Books are organized by genres which will help prepare you for finding books in our newly organized library at school.

Hoopla - is a digital media service that allows you to borrow eBooks, audio books, music and movies

Novelist - this is a great site to go to if you are have trouble trying to figure out what to read next.  All you need to do is enter in some key words that describe what types of books you like to read and Novelist will give you suggestions for books to read.

OverDrive Borrow eBooks - eBooks and audiobooks for all ages including picture books, activity/craft books, read along books, graphic novels, and chapter books

Leduc Public Library - TumbleBooks - Leduc Public LibraryTumbleBooks - animated, talking picture books that you can read or have read to you.  These books are ideal for beginning readers.

I know it would be wonderful to spend the day reading and listening to stories but you do have some school work to do as well.  The Northern Lights eResources also has some learning sites to help you with your school work.

GALE - is a series of interactive learning programs for kindergarten through high school

National Geographic - if you are feeling stuck at home this is a great site to begin some online exploring of world.  Earth Day is coming up and Nat Geo wants to take you on a safari!

Solaro - a great homework help site for Alberta students in Grade 3-12.  Solaro provides online study help, it is very interactive with teaching lessons and quizzes and follows the Alberta Curriculum.

So my friends, I am really missing you but I hope that you haven't stopped reading and learning while we are apart.

Online Reference Center

Hello Students,

The Online Reference Center is an online resource that has been made especially for Alberta students in kindergarten to grade 12.  You will find multimedia learning resources that match the Alberta curriculum.

Just go to LearnAlberta.ca and click on the Online Reference Center tab.  Yes, you will find lots of resources!  You will notice that the grade levels are indicated as well as a helpful description of what can be found on each website.   I will just highlight a few that you might be interested in.

Bookflix - This is a great resource which uses interactive fiction and non-fiction books organized according to the following themes: Animals and Nature, Earth and Sky, People and Places; ABC’s and 1,2, 3’s, Family and Community, Music and Rhyme, Adventure, Celebrations, and Imagination. You can read along with the audio or read the books on your own and then complete puzzles and activities based on the books you read.

PebbleGo Next Science/Social Studies Use this fun and interactive database to access information about the world around you, families, community jobs, being a good citizen, world holidays, then and now, and the environment. PebbleGO Science: Use this database to learn more about plants, animals, sound, simple machines, light, earth science, seasons, weather, and humans. Scholastic Go - Just as the title says, go here to find information on just about anything.  You will find atlases, encyclopedias, videos, dictionaries and world news.

Teaching Books.net - one of my favorite sites.  I go here to find out more information about the books I am reading, like information about the authors, book trailer videos, read along audio books and best of all a Reader's Advisory to help you find the right book for you.

TigTag - great short science documentary videos.

TrueFlix - Another one of my favorite sites for non-fiction books. Use this resource to access videos and interactive non-fiction books organized according to the following categories: Earth Science, Ecosystems, Experiments, Extreme Nature, Human Body, Space, Ancient Civilizations, Continents and Disasters. Project ideas, quizzes and web links are provided.

Who knew you could find so many great resources.  Hopefully some of these will help you in your new way of learning.
